To tap into and draw from: it’s motion, action, repeat. Easier said than done. The self-help industrial complex would have us believe there’s a 12-step program to our healing. There isn’t. Not if we’re doing our emotional work, and developing a healing practice – it simply doesn’t work that way.
That’s partially because this assumes every step we take is a step forward – not true. Sometimes the wellspring we want to draw is empty, we didn’t nourish or nurture it, or it can feel overwhelming – it feels as if it's choking us. So, we put it down.
We stay well away from it, and retreat into familiar patterns. Just because patterns aren’t healthy doesn’t mean we don’t derive comfort from their familiarity. That’s what healing within our particular humanity means. It can be messy.
So, when we tap in or draw from, I invite us to give ourselves grace. Each step matters. Each one. Healing math isn’t linear, it’s hopscotch – forwards, backwards, repeat.
So, as you draw from the wellspring by doing your emotional work – take a moment, look in the mirror and ask: what is my healing math amounting to today?
